That’s right Otaku’s, the best holiday of the year is coming upon us fast. The only holiday where a bearded nerd can dress up like a sailor scount (see above), It’s also a fairly useful day for any other fan who would like to dress up as their favorite anime or manga character. Halloween-the realm of vampires, mummies, and now: Japanese anime.
Cosplay, we’ve all seen it -whether on the web or in person. Some of us have probably even tried it. It’s commonly known as the practice of dressing up as a anime or manga (and sometimes a game) character for no particular reason. No reason huh? I’ll explain, Cosplay is done when you feel like it - it doesn’t need a day or event; although a day like Halloween or an event like an Expo does save the majority of us who have a good sense of embarassment. It’s a just one of those “things” (trends).
To understand this trend, we’re going to need a quick historical overview. Cosplay started back in the 1980’s with the introduction of Anime Expo’s to the United States. It was started after the already trendy, and equally nerdy, trend of Masquerading. A Masquerade was common costumed event at a science-fiction or comic con.? Cosplay is simply the same, but more stylized and focused to Japanese Anime.
So. Your impressed..huh, and you want to know more about this “cosplay”. If you are going to to go out cosplay I’d suggest getting a good costume. To do this you’ll want to find some quality shops who sell cosplay costumes, or if your fairly good with a needle pull out a sewing machine and start up the old imagination drive. You may want to look at these stores: The Cosplay Store, QQ Cosplay, or Moon Costumes.
Unless your going to a Convention, I’d recommend sticking to Halloween. However on the off chance you are reading this in preparation for your first convention gig, you may want to reference these guides: Beginners Guide to Cosplay, The Cosplay How-To, or A Cosplayer’s Guide to Cosplay.
In any case, if any reader here, Cosplay’s - please post a picture of yourself in the comment section. This a fairly popular trend and I’d love to see examples by our readers. ‘Till Next time Otakus! ?Joel, AA Chief Editor
